RUSKINGTON: The way it was.

The Peatmans

John Peatman
The Peatmans first came to Ruskington in 1876 when my Great Grandfather, John Peatman aged 26, moved from Park street, Lincoln, with his wife Ellen and their son George. Two more sons were born after the move, William and Arthur. John rented Claypole's shop, living accommodation and bake house, from William Price, and the business became known as J Peatman Baker And Grocer.

In 1905, when his three sons were old enough to work, the business was renamed J Peatman and Sons. After WW1 the brothers took over the shop and renamed it Peatman Brothers. In subsequent years the business was expanded by the purchase of additional shops (as shown by the advertisement below) and various properties.

In the early 1930's the business was being run by George and his sons, Ted, Walt and Bill (my uncles). It then became known as Peatman Bros Ltd. Subsequently Walt's youngest child, Alan, took over the business. It closed in 1978 mainly due to the advent of the supermarket and Alan's failing health.
